Monash Law School is keen to ensure that our consistently outstanding students receive encouragement and support to build on their success.

As part of this endeavour, in 2008 Monash Law School launched the High Academic Achievers’ Programme.

 

Program Objectives

  • Acknowledge and celebrate high performing students

  • Establish a network of scholars in which high achieving students meet and collaborate with their peers

  • Provide targeted support and resources in order to enable the students to realise their potential having regard to the wide range of possibilities (both in relation to employment and otherwise) that their high level of achievement opens up for them

  • Encourage high achieving students to undertake the Honours programme

  • Ensure that students are aware of and have access to further opportunities for exchanges, study overseas and higher degrees by research

Successful Public Speaking Workshop

Ms Kim Little, a Supreme Court Prize winner from Monash University and former winner of the World Debating Championships, presents a workshop on public speaking for the High Achievers.

Lunch with Maxwell P, President of Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Victoria

Maxwell P invites the high achieving students to have lunch with him in his Chambers. The President talks to the students about his role as a judge, and as President particularly, and takes them on a tour of the Court. The students also have the opportunity to meet with Maxwell P's associates and to speak to them about the associate's role.

Visit Human Rights Law Resource Centre

Phil Lynch, Director of the Human Rights Law Resource Centre, invites the high achieving students to attend a discussion about human rights lawyering at the Human Rights Law Resource Centre. The visit provides students with the opportunity to speak with a number of leading human rights practitioners about strategic litigation, advocacy and policy work to promote human rights, both at the domestic and international levels.

Careers in Government and Non - Governmental Organisations Seminar A range of speakers from government solicitors' offices, branches of the civil service and non-governmental organisations discuss career opportunities outside of legal practice. They share their experiences of working outside commercial legal practice.

Introduction to Honours Unit Seminar, with Current Honours Work in Progress Presentations

The Honours Convenor, some current honours supervisors, and library staff explain everything you might want to know about the honours research unit. A few current honours students have been invited to present aspects of their ongoing research projects to the high achieving students. These presentations should give students a flavour of the wide variety of research topics chosen by this year's honours students, and first-hand insights into the practicalities and rewards of writing an honours thesis.

Alumni Dinner

The final session of the 2009 program involves high achievers having dinner with a number of respected alumni of Monash Faculty of Law. This evening gives students the opportunity to reflect on the program and to socialise with alumni and academic staff.

Dinner Hosted by The Dean

The 2009 Program was launched at a dinner hosted by the Dean. The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and a number of other academic staff welcomed high achieving students to the program and celebrated thier achievements in thier law studies. The Convenor of the High Achievers’ Program also gave an overview of this year’s functions and events.

Postgraduate Studies and Scholarship Opportunities Seminar

Various speakers outline postgraduate opportunities available to high achieving students, both internationally and domestically. Staff members and postgraduate students who completed or are currently undertaking research studies share their experiences with the students attending.

Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition Information Session

Dr Gideon Boas, Monash Law’s new coach for the Jessup Moot team year began recruiting and informed the High Achievers about the world's largest moot court competition, with participants from over 500 law schools in more than 80 countries.

The competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. The general topic for the 2009/2010 Jessup Moot will be ‘The right to self-determination and the lawfulness of measures taken to protect the economic resources of a State’.

Effective Strategies for Dealing with Stress Seminar

In this session, Mr Anthony Lester, the Law Faculty Student Counsellor, discussed the particular stresses to which high achieving students may be subject, and useful strategies for dealing with this stress.
