Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement

The Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement is awarded to a student who has completed the academic requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 2009 and is eligible to graduate and is judged to have an excellent academic record and to have demonstrated a significant commitment, while at Monash, to advancing the University's goals of social justice, human rights and a sustainable environment.

Benefits and Number of Awards

One Sir John Monash Medal is awarded to one LLB student per year. The medal will be proclaimed at the faculty prizes ceremony and their graduation ceremony, and awarded at the graduation ceremony. The award will also be included on official University transcripts.

Eligibility Criteria

The following eligibility criteria apply:

  • A recipient of the Sir John Monash Medal must have completed their course and qualified for the award of Bachelor of Laws with Honours no later than the end of the semester two deferred examination period immediately preceding the grant of the award
  • Recipients must be seen to have made an outstanding contribution in advancing one or more of the nominated areas, namely, social justice, human rights and a sustainable environment.
  • No student who has failed a unit after attempting the assessment for the unit is eligible for this award, unless the Selection Committee determines that there are exceptional circumstances.
  • Former winners of the Sir John Monash medal are not eligible to apply.
  • A student completing a combined degree is not eligible to receive the award of the Sir John Monash medal from two faculties.

Nominations and Selection Process

  1. The Selection Committee comprises the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies, the Manager, Student and Administrative Services, and the Student Experience Manager for the Faculty of Law.
  2. A nomination can be made by the student, a fellow student, any Monash staff member, or any member of the community by completing the nomination form.
  3. The nomination must include a letter explaining the reason for the nomination, any supporting evidence and permission from the student to have his or her academic records released to the selection committee.
  4. Persons nominated for the Sir John Monash Medal may, if they so request, be considered for nomination by the Dean of Law for the Chief Justice's Medal for Excellence and Community Service
  5. The Selection Committee will make a recommendation to the Dean of Law by Friday 6 March 2010 as to the award of the Sir John Monash Medal.

Past Winners
