Our students

The Monash Law School has been shaped by the students who pass through it. Graduates are employed in both legal and non-legal positions globally and students are exposed to these careers through various practical and international opportunities available. Here are some comments from current Monash Law School students.

"Initially I found the law school to be a daunting place. However, with the assistance of the Law Students’ Society and law school Staff I found my feet through their excellent support and encouragement. I was overwhelmed by the number and diversity of students attending lectures. Since then I have made many new friends both inside and out of the classroom and haven’t looked back.

"Doing Business (Banking and Finance) with Law has opened my career prospects greatly. Given that there are so many law graduates each year, I have found that it is important to get a well rounded education in order to stand out from the crowd after graduation. The Monash Law degree is very career focused and directed towards practicality more than any other law degree. With the practical legal training available, Monash Law will provide me with the skills required to go into practice as a lawyer directly after graduation."

"My first impression of the law school was one of pleasant surprise at the size of the library. There is an impressive array of catalogues, journals, law reports and - of course - leather chesterfield couches! I have since been overwhelmed by the quality of information technology available. The multi-faceted talents and knowledge of staff and fellow students also provide for a diverse and motivating learning environment that is second to none.

"I found that Monash had the capacity to effectively cater for my diverging academic interests and completed the first part of my double degree (Bachelor of Performing Arts/Bachelor of Law) in 2003. The degrees complement each other; performing arts providing presentation skills and law assisting with the development of theoretical knowledge and philosophical methodologies.

"My particular legal interests span the fields of Intellectual Property and Human Rights law. I found that an early dalliance with the Monash Association of Debaters was an informative crash-course in the varying styles of public speaking that I had not, until that point, investigated thoroughly. However my first passion has always been the Monash Amnesty International Club, which provided me with a opportunity to experience and confront some of society’s larger issues and contest the repercussions of unethical law-making at a grassroots level."

"I found that the first year of law at Monash was well paced, providing new students with the opportunity to familiarise themselves with as many aspects of the law school as possible. My involvement in mooting competitions, international exchange programs and LSS activities has added to the quality of the law degree and provided many great memories. Getting a piece of paper at the end of the degree is only a small part of a much greater experience. The law school Staff are always friendly and approachable and frequently organise exam revision tutorials in order to allow those lagging a bit to catch up.

"The law school offers a wide range of elective subjects and areas of study. Having completed a Biomedical Science degree, I am particularly interested in Intellectual Property law, Biotechnology law and Technology law. By majoring in these areas I intend to undertake an articled clerkship upon graduation, work in intellectual property law before exploring international employment opportunities."
